Acts 2:42 defines the purpose of the church, "And they (the early Christians) were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teachings and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread (participating in Communion) and to prayer." According to this verse, the purpose of the church should be (1) teaching biblical doctrines, (2) providing a place of fellowship for believers, (3) observing the Lord’s Supper, and (4) praying.
Another duty given to the church is proclaiming the Gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ. The church is meant to be a lighthouse in the community, pointing people toward our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
In 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, the Apostle Paul gives us an excellent illustration of the mission that God has assigned to us. The church, as the body of Christ, should function as God’s hands, mouth, and feet in this world. In other words, we are to be doing the things that Jesus Christ would do if He were here physically present on this earth.
It has been taught that the purpose of the church can be broken up into three E’s—evangelization of the lost, exaltation of Jesus as Lord and Redeemer, and the edification of the believer.
One of the questions that appeared on a British census form in 1966 asked, "At what age did you finish your education?" Arthur Cox, a famous journalist answered, "I never finished my education because as long as I live, I make an effort to learn new things every day." If you join us in worship on any given Sunday, your knowledge of God's Word will be vastly expanded.
In summary, the purpose of the church is to worship God, study His Word, pray, love one another, help each other, learn how to live as godly people and to be equipped to evangelize unbelievers. We cordially invite you to visit our friendly church and see how the Gospel message is very practical and relevant to the age in which we live. We are a small church with a BIG HEART.
